I’m a big fan of alternate history: one of my favorite books of all time is Orson Scott Card’s Pastwatch, about a group of time travelers who attempt to limit the negative impact of Christopher Columbus on the Americas, and one of my favorite TV shows is the Space Race alternate history For All Mankind. In fact, this series was sort of a response to the latter. What if, instead of intensifying, the Space Race completely fizzled out after Apollo 11 because it was no longer seen as worth the cost?
The style of this one is a bit different, you’ll notice. That’s because this was originally posted to the community r/imaginaryelections, in two parts (here’s Part 1 and Part 2), and I wanted to fit the style of some of the more serious alternate histories posted there. I strove generally for accuracy, but of course there were a few things I added just for the fun of them (such as “Songs in the Key of Life” being the bestselling album of all time, mostly just because I like it).
